Aberdeen City Council Fined £100,000 by the ICO
The ICO revealed it has issued Aberdeen City Council with a fine for £100,000 after confidential records of some of its constituents were published online. Some of the information related to alleged criminal offences of constituents and the care of vulnerable children.
The breach occurred when a council worker accessed sensitive documents from her personal computer while at home. Her machine had a file transfer programme installed on it, which automatically uploaded all of the sensitive information onto the Internet.
The ICO stated that Aberdeen City Council had no relevant home working policy in place for staff and failed to have sufficient measures in place to restrict external downloading of sensitive information from the council’s network. The huge fine administered by the ICO speaks volumes about their tolerance to Local authority data breaches.
If you would like to speak to someone at Apperception about how your organisation could avoid security breaches such as these please register an interest here. You can read more on the story here ICO.
